Virginia worked for Fontaine even while at War. She arranged a one-man show of eighteen of his watercolors to travel across country. He continued to paint even as his troop traveled from village to village. He had set up an extra pup tent for his painting. While stationed in Rome, Naples and Florence, he painted murals for the Army clubs there and illustrated the official history of the II Corp of Engineers. This watercolor show travelled to the Milwaukee Art Institute, U. of Indiana Fine Arts Center, Ripon College, Wis.; Kalamazoo institute of Art, Fitchburg Art Center, Mass.
